Adult Clay Classes
Spring Classes run from March 31st to May 25th

Summer Session—May 26 to July 20th

Cost per 8 week adult class session is $285.00
Adult clay class fees include 25 lbs. of clay, glaze materials, and open classroom time. Firing Fees for bisque firing only (cone 06) are calculated at $1.00 per pound.
There is no fee for glaze firings.
Additional clay is available and can be purchased during business hours.
Tool kits are recommended and are available for an additional cost.

Class times are for both Oak Park and LaGrange locations, unless otherwise indicated.

Beginning Wheel Throwing
An introduction to basic throwing techniques: centering clay, forming cylinders, bowls and plate forms. Glazing and surface treatment also covered. Caution: This activity can be habit forming!

Intermediate / Advanced Wheel  
For those who are comfortable throwing basic cylinder and bowl shapes. This class will focus on constructing more complex forms such as teapots, pitchers, covered jars and casseroles. Students also work on mastering the more technical aspects of glazing and firing

Handbuilding
Many differing techniques for working with clay will be explored in this open-ended class including: basic handbuilding techniques of coil, pinch and slabs, as well as an in-depth focus on surface treatment and glazing. The student will be expected to be open to experimentation and furthering their visual vocabulary.

Tile Making and Mosiacs
Want to create a unique back splash? Cover a wall or floor? How about a one of a kind tray or table top? Learn to create your own tiles and mosaic projects using a variety of easy to learn techniques. No experience needed. Making flat tiles cut from slabs and dimensional tiles, by hand or from press molds, will be covered. Learn to decorate with slips, under-glazes, glazes and how to use patterns, carved relief, stamps, in this very useful class. Turn chipped china, mirror, glass, tile, broken heirlooms or personal mementos into lasting treasures. If you don’t have the china or heirlooms, we’ll provide the mosaic materials.

Understanding Clay, Glazes and Firing
(basic glaze calculation)
Do you want to understand more of what happens to your pieces after they are placed in the kiln? Are you interested in creating your own glazes, but you’re not a chemist? This class is for you! We will use a limit formula/recipe approach to explore the formulation of glazes. This class will introduce the students to the basic components which make up glazes. Through guided testing and experimentation students will learn to design their own glazes. Students will also learn about the role of heat and atmosphere, as well as the clay body, in the creation of a successful piece. Students will have the opportunity to take part in a kiln firing

the class is $145. + lab fee.
This class requires an additional $30 lab fee.

Independent Study / Shelf Rental

For the individual seeking the facilities and environment needed to continue their development in ceramics.  This option gives you 24 hr. access to the facilities and equipment as well as a private shelf space.  This option does not include instruction, and is open only to individuals with prerequisite experience.  Shelves are rented for a minimum of three months with payment due in advance.

Custom Classes Available
Interested in a ceramics or metals class, but you don’t see anything that fits your schedule? Would you prefer private instruction? Perhaps you’d like to put something together with a group of friends or coworkers. Call us. We can set up custom classes to fit your needs and ability level.

Be sure to take advantage of our open studio time. Practice time is a very important factor in mastering the skills we teach. There is a direct correlation between the time you are able to practice and the level of progress you will experience. Open Studio Times : Monday - Friday 10 -10, Saturday 10 - 6, Sunday 10-4. *Open Studio is available anytime there is a “Key holder” in the building. The listed open studio times are the minimum open studio hours. Additional hours may be available on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

A 50% deposit is required to reserve class or workshop space. The balance must be paid by the first class or the time of the workshop. Refunds and cancellations: If you must cancel a class or workshop, every effort will be made to fill your space. If we can fill the space, we will return your registration, less a $30 processing fee. No refunds will be made for any cancellations made less than 2 weeks prior to the class or workshop. *If, for any reason, the staff or management of TERRA INCOGNITO must reschedule a class, every attempt will be made to schedule make-up classes, at the convenience of the majority of the students. Classes missed as a result of scheduling conflicts or absences of the student, for any reason, are not the responsibility of TERRA INCOGNITO. In most cases, missed classes can be made up during another scheduled class of the same session.
