I am interested in various
pottery forms such as cups, vases, bowls and teapots and the sculptural
elements they possess. I like exploring the vessel's natural association
with function by distorting the forms and altering their scale,
surface and proportions. A successful piece, or one that works
for me, says something about both pottery and sculpture.

Clay is
the most pliable material; it's a bit-by-bit record of touch. The
pure intamacy of the material draws me in and has kept me involved
throughout my life. My pots have always been figurative, and this
is not my first go with directly figurative work. The most recent
work, in this exhibition, is pushing the metaphor a little further,
but all pots are metaphors for people.
Whether they have heads or not, I think of them
as personalities with distinct characteristics. Their persons are
revealed in their shape, gesture, and color. I think the specifics
of facial features and expressions adds to them, but I hope it
doesn't limit them.
